Standard set of health outcome measures for older persons

Abstract: BackgroundThe International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) was founded in 2012 to propose consensus-based measurement tools and documentation for different conditions and populations. This article describes how the ICHOM Older Person Working Group followed a consensus-driven modified Delphi technique to develop multiple global outcome measures in older persons. The standard set of outcome measures developed by this group will support the ability of healthcare systems to improve their care pat… Show more

“…After the intervention, a booklet is created by the research team, integrating the person's important elements evoked during implementation of the Revie Da Rocha Rodrigues et al, 2016 (feasibility, mixed-method) Tf8 It was not unexpected that "Dignity-related distress" (used in 13 of the articles) and "Quality of life" (used in 16 of the articles) were among the most studied outcomes identified, as these concepts are concrete and central in palliative care (Ho et al, 2014;World Health Organization, 2018). These outcomes have also been listed by other researchers as essential (Johnston et al, 2017a;Akpan et al, 2018). Therefore, health organizations must enable healthcare professionals to emphasize aspects such as these.…”

“…One challenge for future observational studies is trying to capture and report more about statin exposure, which at present is frequently limited to prevalent use at one moment in time, whereas it is possible the benefit of statins accrues over many years and discontinuation may also be important . Future studies would also be an opportunity to include efficacy and side‐effect categories that are particularly pertinent to this patient group, such as mobility and functional independence . In the meantime, the mechanisms by which statins might be protective of cognition for people with AD dementia can be explored, to see if the benefits can be leveraged without the harm or complexity of extra medication.…”

Past studies focused on high cholesterol and amyloid levels, but new evidence points to the role of cholesterol in regulating the activity of microglia.…”

“…Objectives a–h will be met in the feasibility randomized controlled trial: To assess compliance with the holistic assessment and care planning intervention (HAPPI). To verify that proposed outcome measurement and follow‐up schedules are feasible to collect. To determine achievable targets for recruitment and follow‐up rates. To evaluate method of recruitment using the electronic frailty index (eFI). To evaluate characteristics and feasibility of the proposed outcome measures and to determine suitable outcome measures for the definitive trial. Outcome measures to be evaluated have been taken from the ICHOM Older Persons Reference Guide (Akpan et al, ). To calculate standard deviation of the outcome measures to estimate sample size for the definitive trial. To assess availability of clinical data and time needed to collect and analyse data required for numeric outcome measures. To explore factors that will enable future economic evaluation alongside the main trial. …”
