Standardization in Tire Modeling and Tire Testing — TYDEX Workgroup, TIME Project

Abstract: As a result of the 1st International Colloquium on Tire Models for Vehicle Dynamics Analysis in 1991, the international TYDEX Workshop working group was established. This workshop concentrated on the standardization of the exchange of tire measurement data and the interface between tire and vehicle models in order to improve the communications between vehicle manufacturers, suppliers, and research organizations. The development and knowledge of tire behavior is of great importance to both the tire and vehicle … Show more

“…Normally, the data to parametrize the Magic Formula for a tire in a specific condition is done at high velocities, although this is not possible in the TMVS laboratory. An accurate depiction of the parameters, by including the camber angle effects during steady-state cornering requires a high number of tests to be conducted on each tire (Van Oosten, 1999). Thus, the results of the parametrization should be viewed simply as an attempt to find the effects on the various parameters but the values found were not validated.…”

“…Thirdly, it is also significant that force-slip relationships measured on different rigs for nominally the same tyre, even for modest slip levels for which the tyre structure is the main influence, are significantly different from each other [8]. Therefore, the idea that a type of tyre can be characterized precisely by one particular set of measurements for running over the road in quite general circumstances is not a good one.…”

“…Some of these testing procedures have been standardised. Van Oosten et al [6] describe a standard tyre interface and the TIME project aiming at a standard tyre testing procedure that is reliable and consistent with realistic driving conditions. Hüsemann and Wöhrmann [7] present a review of required tyre measurements for different tyre simulation models.…”
