Standardization of an Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) Pollen Allergen Extract

Abstract: Background: Ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior) is the main representative of the Oleaceae family in temperate zones. Diagnosis of ash pollen allergy is made difficult due to (1) an overlapping pollinization period with Betulaceae, (2) non-inclusion in current diagnostic assays, and (3) some cross- reactivity with minor allergens from Betulaceae. The aim of this study was to calibrate an ash pollen in-house reference preparation (IHRP) in allergic patients in order to produce standardized products for diagnosis and … Show more

“…Therefore, most studies on ash pollen are carried out in Spain, France (Alsace), Switzerland and Austria. For a long time, ash pollen was not routinely investigated, due on the one hand to generally overlapping pollination periods, whilst on the other due to its cross-reactivity with trees in the Betulaceae family [ 3 , 4 ]. The significance of ash pollen allergy was only recognized more recently.…”

“…The biological functions of these proteins are unknown, yet the protein profiles of the Oleaceae genera are similar to each other (Obispo et al 1993;Barderas et al 2005;Hrabina et al 2007). In this regard, it is remarkable that Ole e 1 shows sequence similarity with other proteins from pollens of nonrelated species.…”
