Standby Consumption in Households Analyzed With a Practice Theory Approach

Abstract: This article focuses on the energy consumption of households and the question of how daily routines can be changed in a more sustainable direction. It discusses different theoretical approaches with which to understand consumer behavior and introduces practice theory that emphasizes sociotechnical structures as the basis for analyzing stability of consumer practices and opportunities for change. “…The main sources of qualitative data were semi-structured interviews with these students. As our main theoretical interest was in mapping practices, the interview guide was based on the operationalization of central concepts from practice theories, mostly based on Gram-Hanssen [30] overview of general elements of a practice. A total of 19 interviews were conducted over a period of two months (January-February 2016).…”

“…The interviews were consequently uploaded into Weft QDA (an open source software package for the analysis of qualitative data; Fenton, London, UK) and coded. Some codes were drawn up a priori, i.e., general practice theoretical concepts based on Gram-Hanssen [30] overview. These were complemented by more exact inductive codes grounded in the data, such as specific access issues and strategies students employed to address these challenges.…”

“…Practice theory has been used widely in studies of consumer behaviors, with a focus on how consumption practices emerge and change over time (Warde 2005, Gram-Hanssen 2010, Pantzar and Shove 2010. Although we are not aware of previous studies applying practice theory to hands-on stewardship, three aspects of practice and related theories suggest that they may prove useful in the civic ecology context.…”

“…Whilst social practice theorists differ in emphasis, (Gram-Hanssen 2010;Reckwitz 2002;Røpke 2009;Schatzki 2002), for the purposes of this paper there is loose agreement that practices are comprised of routinized forms of action which consist of interacting elements. Examples are commuting practices, cleaning practices, production practices and lighting practices.…”
