Standing on the shoulders of giants

Abstract: In this editorial, the author explains that the journal Temperature stands on the shoulders of giants—prominent scientists of the past and current members of the Temperature community. Temperature also uses the best tools, such as Google Scholar profiles. The editorial includes a new puzzle: why does warm water freeze faster than cold water?

Here is the original text of the riddle: "In 1963, Erasto Mpemba, a precocious middle school student in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) was taking a cooking course.…”

“…Why?" In the editorial, 1 I gave the readers a hint, stating that the puzzle was based on Pollack's latest book, which I disclose now: see reference 2. However, neither of the 2 answers we received 3,4 used this hint.…”

“…Rather, we wanted to unveil some of the most relevant, interesting and important phenomena and conclusions, thus stimulating curiosity in our readers. As stated in Temperature 's inaugural editorial, 20 the journal aims at becoming a thermoregulation club, a discussion forum, an intellectual magnet, a feedback provider, a science news room … . Readers’ curiosity is exactly what Temperature strives to both satisfy and encourage.…”
