Starch Derivatives of High Degree of Functionalization. 7. Preparation of Cationic 2‐Hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium Chloride Starches

Abstract: Water‐soluble starch derivatives containing quarternary ammonium groups of high degree of substitution are prepared by reacting starch with 2,3‐epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride in different reaction media. The reaction was carried out in aqueous sodium hydroxide under dissolution of the product, in dimethyl sulfoxide homogeneously, and completely heterogeneously in ethanol/water. The DS values of up to 1.1 in an one‐step synthesis of the samples can be controlled by adjusting the molar ratio of cationizat… Show more

“…11 This may be explained by the fact that in the first case, the charged groups are accumulated on the surface of the hemicelluloses and the diffusion of further cationic agent into the inner parts is increasingly hindered. With processes with homogeneous sequences, cationic hemicelluloses are dissolved, and the reaction on the new surface of the hemicelluloses is less impeded.…”

“…Reaction of corn starch with quaternary ammonium in the ionic liquid produced cationic starch with DS of 0.99 [1]. Homogenous reaction conditions using medium DMSO can increase the DS compared to heterogeneous reaction condition in ethanol/water medium [4]. Although there are several ways of obtaining cationic starches with high DS, the use of harmful solvents, difficult in purification process and high cost of solvents limits the production of the cationic starches.…”

“…The degree of substitution (DS) calculated from the nitrogen content analyzed using a Perkin Elmer 2400 II was 0.24. 16 The tertiary ammonium starch derivative (TS) was synthesized using dimethylamine HCl instead of trimethylamine HCl. The DS was 0.12.…”
