Stark effect investigations of the 4f 14 6s 6p 3 P 1 and1 P 1 levels of ytterbium

Abstract: The tensor polarizabilities of the 4f~6s6p 3p~ level were investigated for all stable Ytterbium isotopes by the method of optical double resonance. The tensor polarizabilities were deduced from the rf-resonance signals in parallel electric and magnetic fields. The value obtained for the even Yb isotopes is in good agreement with the results derived from the measurements on the odd isotopes. The mean value is ~ten(3P1) = 5.99 (34) kHz/(kV/cm) 2. The tensor polarizability of the 4f ~ ~ 6 s 6 p 1p~ level of t 71y… Show more

“…The eigenvector set of Conway [22] of the 7F states shows that there is no configuration mixing. Assuming that one has pure LS coupling, and since the fine structure splitting of the ground multiplet is small compared to the possible optical energy interval, the spin dependence of the Stark parameter can be eliminated by the LS coupling approximation [20,21], and the tensor polarizability of the investigated levels can then be described by the same parameter e2(L):…”

“…6 levels of the ground multiplet of Sm were determined. By means of the LS coupling approximation [20,21] the experimental tensor potarizabilities of these levels can be described by one parameter, depending only on the orbital angular momentum L. In addition, the validity of the central field approximation in the ground multiplet of Sm was tested by the experimental results.…”

“…These systems are the ones under consideration as frequency standards or are being used in atomic parity violation experiments. Measurements for some states have been omitted from the table, and some older or less precise results on Sc, Y, La and Lu [307], Cd [206], Ba [259,266,308], Hg [206], Yb [276], Sm and Eu [273] have also been omitted.…”

“…Consequently, great progress has been achieved in the evaluation of Stark effect datas by using Dopplerfree methods in the last two decades. For example, optical double resonance [1,2], phasesensitive detection of fluorescence ("method of beats") [3], level-crossing [4,5], or time resolved registration of resonance fluorescence in pulsed electric fields [6] brought considerable success in the determination of Stark splittings even when used with classical light sources. Since the early seventies, lasers have been available for high-resolution spectroscopy enabling the application of many new experimental methods for Stark effect measurements.…”
