Start-up of anaerobic reactors for slaughterhouse wastewater treatment

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the start-up of a horizontal anaerobic fixed bed reactor (HAFBR) followed by an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) for the slaughterhouse wastewater treatment. HAFBR was filled with bamboo rings and had 1.2 m in length, 0.10 m in diameter and volume of 7.5 L. The UASB had the volume of 15 L. The HAFBR and UASB operated at organic loading rate and hydraulic retention time average of 8.46 and 3.77 kg m -3 d -1 of COD and 0.53 and 0.98 days, respectively. During 150 days of monito… Show more

“…SHWs are generally composed of blood, manure and viscera and contain a high proportion of proteins and lipids, thus having a high amount of biodegradable organic matter (Fia et al, 2015). Furthermore, SHWs have a high concentration of pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms and can promote ecotoxicity at acute and chronic levels, which makes the treatment of this effluent indispensable before it is disposed of in water bodies (Pereira et al, 2016).…”

“…[2] Blood contains high levels of protein, nitrogen, and organic matter. [3] Biological technologies have been widely performed for the treatment of organicrich wastewater such as anaerobic baffled reactor, [4] horizontal anaerobic fixedbed reactor, [5] anaerobic fixed-bed reactor, [6] anaerobic sequencing batch reactor, [7] selector tank, [8] moving bed bioreactor, [9] and aerobic granular sludge. [10] However, high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (TN) in the PSW may affect the removal performance of anaerobicaerobic systems.…”
