Startups Transitioning from Early to Growth Phase - A Pilot Study of Technical Debt Perception

Abstract: Context: Software startups are software-intensive early phase companies with high growth rates. Previous researchers regarded startups' time to market as short and decisive in establishing the product/service success. This led to shortcuts in software engineering decisions. Researchers in previous investigations documented a high accumulation of technical debt (TD) in early startup phases. However, we found little evidence in the literature concerning TD when startups transition to the growth phase. Aim: Our g… Show more

“…Cico et al [20] interviewed 13 CEOs and CTOs from seven startups to investigate how TD perception changes over the startup evolution stages. The study found that startups in the early stage accept and ignore TD due to different factors such as requirement validation and lack of developer competence.…”

“…3) Framework Domains and Dimensions. Our framework relies on dimensions from our previously proposed student team-centered model [15], our growth-phase startup research [40][41][42], and opinions gathered from renowned experts in the startup education field (Table 2). Meanwhile, Figure 5 provides a graphical represenation of our proposed framework characterized by its domains, with corresponding dimensions categorized in conceptual and practical areas.…”

“…Two in particular focus on TD perception in early-phase startups [11,1]. A more recent study uncovers four perceptual dimensions of TD (ignore, accept, avoid, and manage) in growth-phase startups [8]. Studies on startups' pivoting and its relationship to TD are scarce.…”

“…However, the study provides no evidence of how TD is related to different pivoting scenarios in various startup lifecycles. Of these two studies, the first focuses on an innovative perspective of various TD perceptions [8] and the other [13] concerns the relationship between TD and pivoting. We thus argue for the need to deepen understanding of the influences of TD and pivoting.…”
