State-of-Health Diagnosis of Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Nonlinear Frequency Response Analysis

Abstract: Estimation of the State-of-Health (SOH) of Lithium-ion Batteries (LIBs) is commonly conducted using in-situ measurement methods, such as Incremental Capacity Analysis (ICA) and Differential Voltage Analysis (DVA) as well as impedance based techniques. In this study, we present an alternative method for SOH estimation: The nonlinear dynamic measurement method Nonlinear Frequency Response Analysis (NFRA) is shown to be able to estimate capacity fade of LIBs due to loss of active material. Capacity loss correlate… Show more

“…Moreover, even more sensitive to reactions and degradation at the surface is the nonlinear version of impedance spectroscopy, nonlinear frequency response analysis [44] . Among other advantages, it enables one to distinguish between plating and cycling aging [45,46] . However, even today this method is not easy to interpret.…”

“… [44] Among other advantages, it enables one to distinguish between plating and cycling aging. [ 45 , 46 ] However, even today this method is not easy to interpret. Thus, for an initial study, we used EIS and discharge curves at different currents to study the impact of gases on performance.…”

“…In contrast, there are few studies on the cycle life of Li-ion batteries. Besides, due to the strong nonlinear [25][26][27][28] characteristics of Li-ion batteries, there is little in-depth discussion on the effective cycle criteria of Li-ion batteries, and most studies use the criteria based on impedance and capacity [29][30][31][32]. As a result, the shortcomings of the cyclic method that it is difficult to accurately estimate the number of cycles has not been compensated.…”

“…There are few novel methods reported in the literature where some kind of special arrangements are made to estimate the SOH [22][23][24] . In 22 , the response of an AC excitation current is processed using the nonlinear frequency response analysis (NFRA) technique to estimate the capacity fade due to the loss of active material. In 23 , the battery is charged with pulse charging technique and the electrical equivalent circuit parameters are estimated using two ANNs for lower and upper frequency ranges.…”
