State‐of‐the‐Art Framework for Structural Design of Offshore Wind Jacket Foundations

Abstract: A state-of-the-art framework for design of jacket foundations for offshore wind turbines is presented. It is illustrated how an efficient, yet highly accurate structural model can be achieved by a combination of a comprehensive beam finite element model and more detailed shell/solid finite element models, where the former suffices for representing the overall global behaviour, while the latter improve the representation of non-trivial structural details such as the transition piece and tubular joints. Hereby t… Show more

“…The local joint flexibility representing the effective stiffness of a tubular joint is modelled via the simplified Buitrago equations [30]. This approach is known to be imprecise [32], so to account for this uncertainty, a value of 0.50 is chosen. The soil stiffness is modified via correction parameters, py, tz, qw, which update the initial stiffness of the linearized API curves [29].…”

“…One is the global finite element modeling to analyze from macroscopic scale [ 6 , 7 ]. The joints of global model are established using beam elements, ignoring the influence of nodal effects, such as the flexibility, geometry and weld configuration of its substructure joints [ 8 , 9 ]. The other is local modeling via small-scale analysis, and the local joint flexibilities of tubular K/DK-joints [ 10 , 11 ], T/Y-joints [ 12 , 13 , 14 ], or X-joints [ 15 , 16 ] are established individually using solid or shell elements for analysis.…”
