State Space Modeling of an Offshore Wind Power Plant With an MMC-HVDC Connection for an Eigenvalue-Based Stability Analysis

Abstract: Large offshore wind power plants (OWPPs) installed far from the coastline are emerging to benefit from the strong and steady wind resources available at these locations. The high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission system based on the modular multilevel converter (MMC) is the most appropriate solution to transmit the produced energy to the onshore grid, in a way that a complex power-electronic-based electrical system is formed at the OWPP. Undesired interactions can occur between the MMC-based HVDC stat… Show more

“…Some topologies are applied in AC-connected windfarms in [3][4][5][6][7]. In [8], a MMC grid-following state-space model is proposed to show clearly converter's dynamics in gridforming mode. In [9], a small-signal stability model for MMC-Based DC Grids is proposed to obtain optimal values of slope coefficients and smoothing reactors.…”

“…State-space modeling is chosen for conducting sensitivity analysis and gaining insights into the internal states of the system, which can subsequently be assessed for stability using eigenvalue analysis. Research on various state-space modeling methods for converter-based systems is well-documented in [10][11][12][13]. These studies emphasize enhanced modularity and offer detailed descriptions of the dynamic states prevalent in wind turbine systems.…”

“…This thesis is only focused on small-signal harmonic stability which typically appears due to the interaction on power converters. [7], [8], [9][10][11]- [19], [20] Much research works have recently focused on harmonic small signal stability analysis of PEPS, either using impedance [7]- [20] or state-space [21]- [26] modeling. These methods are prevalent due to the simplicity of application and the effectiveness of clarifying different operational aspects of the modern power system.…”
