AbstraciElectronically excited tin atoms Sn(5'D2), 1.068 eV above the 5 3 P~ ground state, have been generated by the pulsed irradiation of tin tetramethyl and monitored photoelectrically in absorption by time-resolved attenuation of atomic resonance radiation at = 285.06 nm [Sn((5d3Fz0) t (5p2 lD2))]. Deactivation rate constants are reported for the quenching of Sn(5lD-J with a range of collision partners and the rmulting data are compared with those for analogous states within group IV, namely, C(2ID.J and Pb(6IDz). The data are discussed in terms of correlations based on both the weak and strong spin orbit coupling approximations.

The gas-phase, ion molecule reaction between C,O:' and C,O, has been studied by both double-focusing and ion trap mass spectrometry, rationalized by the formation of a dimeric, odd electron cation IC6041+" which decomposes extensively through sequential CO losses giving rise to IC,O,l+. and IC,O,l+' ions. The thermodynamics of this process have been investigated by means of ab initio calculation performed on the above species using different basis sets (STO-3G, 3-21G and 6-31G*).t Present address:
