Static and fatigue characterization of the Ti5553 titanium alloy

Abstract: This paper presents and discusses static (elastoviscoplastic and damage) and high‐cycle fatigue characterization of two microstructures of the Ti5553 alloy. The difference between these two microstructures is related to their heat treatment and precisely to the temperature of the final aging. For each microstructure, several tests were carried out to identify their static and fatigue properties and the test results were correlated to the microstructure. A fractographic analysis of the rupture sections was perf… Show more

“…The enhanced resistance to fatigue crack initiation is considered as a result of high strength of fine grains and α s precipitates that act as potential obstacles for dislocation motion. Thereby the formation of microcracks is inactive [22]. However, the increase of fatigue strength for BM is just a little as compared to the LM, which will be discussed later.…”

“…The effect of mean stress on fatigue can also be represented in terms of constant-life diagrams which are often used as a design consideration in engineering applications [9]. In most cases, the popular Goodman model is used for the constant life diagrams [9,13,26]. In general, the Goodman formula can be expressed as: (…”

“…It is a variation of the alloy VT22, being an alternative to the Ti-10-2-3 alloy. The advantage of this alloy as compared to other β titanium alloys is the sluggish precipitation kinetics of the α phase [5,6]. Ti5553 offers high strength, excellent hardenability, fracture toughness as well as high fatigue resistance [7].…”
