Static interaction analysis between beam and layered soil using a two-parameter elastic foundation

Abstract: The work presents a finite element modeling of beam resting on a two-parameter layered soil. The behavior of the soil continuum and the beam are assumed to be linear and homogeneous isotropic. Using the strain energy expressions, the shear strain of the beam element and the soil foundation are taken together in the analysis. In this approach, the stiffness matrix of each component is elaborated and integrated in the finite element analysis. First, various examples are elaborated to show the effectiveness of th… Show more

“…The phenomenon of soil-structure interaction inundated the structural engineering domain by numerous studies. Under static loading, this effect is considered in a simplified way and becomes an evident task in computing phase (Boudaa & Khalfallah, 2019). These studies lead to clearly the importance of the soil-structure interaction to estimate real forces in structural members.…”

“…However, this approach suffers a handicap due to discontinuity of the supporting medium and the neglect of shear deformations. To enhance this model, Boudaa [4] improved the one-parameter approach by taking into account shear deformations in the analysis. Also, Viladkar et al [5] presented a discrete interface element to study the soil and beam behaviour.…”

“…One of the soil strengthening effective methods is the pressure cementation method [3,4]. As a result of the cement mortar pressure injection, compactingthe soil around the pile and under its lower end, which leads to an increase in the soil and pile contact interaction along the lateral surface and the soil resistance increase under the lower end [5][6][7][8][9].…”
