Statins and the risk of interstitial lung disease: a cohort study

Abstract: Background Case reports have suggested that the use of statins may be associated with an increase in the risk of interstitial lung disease (ILD). Methods Within a large cohort of users of respiratory medications identified in the Quebec health administrative databases during 1990-2005, we carried out a nested case-control analysis of the relationship between statins and the risk of ILD as defined by specialist visits or hospitalisations. Results The cohort included over 1.4 million patients, of which 6665 poss… Show more

“…EHRLICH et al [27] reported the age-adjusted incidence of "pulmonary fibrosis" in diabetics and non-diabetics in California as 14 per 100 000 per year and 9 per 100 000 per year respectively. SAAD et al [28] reported the incidence of interstitial lung disease (but not IPF specifically) in a Canadian cohort, and the authors were able to provide an incidence of IPF specifically for 2006 of 36.6 per 100 000 per year (probable cases) (P. Ernst, McGill University, Montreal, Canada, personal communication, May 2014).…”

“…Statins, widely used to reduce cardiovascular morbidity in patients with known risk factors, have been implicated in the development of pulmonary fibrosis [108]. Statin-induced lung disease is commonly suspected, due to the widespread use of these agents, but is very rare, accounting for the absence of a demonstrable association between the use of statins and the development of ILD in a large epidemiological study [109]. This observation does not refute the existence of statin-induced lung disease, for which the evidence is sometimes compelling in individual patients.…”

“…F. Xu, et al, 2012). Furthermore, subsequent to the study by Xu et al , a large study of 6,665 patients with ILD was conducted and found no association between statin use and the incidence of ILD (Saad, Camus, Suissa, & Ernst, 2013). …”
