The Integrated Water Resources Management regulations aim to ensure a good status of surface water quality and its sustainable use. Water quality monitoring of various water users supports the identification of pollution sources and their environmental impacts. The priority pollutants generated by wastewater discharges from municipal, industrial wastewater treatment plants or agricultural areas are of great interest due to their eco-toxicological effects and bio-accumulative properties. The aim of this study was to monitor the priority organic and inorganic pollutants from the Siret River basin, in Romania, with the purpose of assessing the surface water quality status and evaluating it by the Water Quality Index (WAWQI) method. The monitoring of inorganic priority pollutants (e.g., As, Cd, Hg, Ni, Pb) and organic priority pollutants (e.g., Naphthalene, Anthracene, Phenanthrene, Fluoranthene, Benzo(a)anthracene, Benzo(b)fluoranthene, Benzo(k)fluoranthene, Benzo(a)pyrene, Benzo(ghi)perylene, Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene, α, β, and γ-Hexachlorocyclohexane, and Di-2-ethyl-hexyl-phthalate) was conducted within the Siret River basin, during the period 2015–2020. With this purpose, 21 sampling points (18 river sections and 3 lakes) were considered to assess the water quality. The results of this study proved that the water quality within the Siret River basin is generally classified in the 2nd or 3rd class. The spatial distribution of the water quality index values, using ARCGIS, also highlighted the fact that the water quality is mostly unsuitable for drinking water supplies, being influenced by the quality of its main tributaries, as well as by the effluent of wastewater treatment plants.

Ormanlar, sahip olduğu biyoçeşitlilik ile sağladığı katkılar açısından yeryüzünün vazgeçilmez bir parçasıdır. Gezegenimizin üçte birine yayılmış durumda olan ormanları etkileyen en önemli faktörlerin başında yangınlar gelmektedir. Orman yangınları yeryüzündeki doğal afetler içerisinde neden oldukları yıkıcı etkiler ile öne çıkmakta, ayrıca çok önemli bir gaz ve aerosol kaynağı olarak nitelendirilmektedirler. Orman yangınlarının takibi, afet izleme ve önleme açısından son derece önemli bir durumdur. Son yıllarda yangınların takibinde sıklıkla kullanılmakta olan Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemleri (CBS) ve Uzaktan Algılama, veri toplama, analiz ve yorumlama bakımından öne çıkan yöntemlerdir. Bu çalışma, 22 Ağustos 2023 tarihinde Çanakkale’de meydana gelen ve 3 gün süren orman yangınının Sentinel–2 ve 5P uzaktan algılama görüntüleri ve CBS yardımıyla analizine odaklanmaktadır. Analizin sonuçları, yangından etkilenen toplam alanın 4191.93 hektara (ha) yayıldığını ve çok çeşitli Arazi Örtüsü / Kullanımı sınıflarını kapsadığını ortaya koymuştur. Özellikle, ormanlar ve tarım arazileri bu bölgede en belirgin hasarı görmüştür. Çalışmada ayrıca yangın sonrasında atmosfere yayılan kirletici maddelerin yoğunluğunu gösteren Aerosol indeks değeri ve Azot dioksit (NO2) hava kirliliği parametreleri izlenmiş ve uydu görüntüleri aracılığıyla konsantrasyonları belirlenmiştir. Kaydedilen en yüksek NO2 konsantrasyonu yangının son günü olan 24 Ağustos’ta 0.02624702 mol/m² olarak tespit edilmiştir. Üç günlük toplam atmosfere yayılan NO2 değeri ise 0.06020184 mol/m² olarak belirlenmiştir.

Air Quality Integrated Assessment: Environmental Impacts, Risks and Human Health Hazards

The monitoring and evaluation of air quality is a topic of great global interest as, with the decline of air quality, there are negative effects on human health and ecosystems. Thus, the purpose of this paper was to evaluate the air quality over 11 years, in the period 2011–2021, in four cities in Romania, reported as most polluted, namely, Brasov, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, and Timisoara. Pollutants of interest included arsenic, carbon monoxide, and PM2.5. The measured concentrations of the selected pollutants were collected from the National Environmental Protection Agency public reports. The database considered the daily measurements for the selected pollutants, from three monitoring stations in each city so that the air quality and trends for the last 11 years and impact assessment could be developed. Therefore, the input data were statistically analyzed to identify the trends of air quality, and then, on this basis, the environmental impacts and risks and health hazards were quantified. High concentrations of PM2.5 were recorded for Iasi city, while for Timisoara city, significant concentrations of arsenic were reported. The results regarding the air quality aggregate index, air pollution index, and health hazard index were in the regular range, but in the case of sensitive, vulnerable targets such as children, they were triple compared to adults. The results show that the alert threshold value for PM2.5 was exceeded every year in all four cities, while in the case of Timisoara city, the arsenic air pollution proved to be at a significant level with a major risk for human health.
