Statistical‐based or condition‐based preventive maintenance?

Abstract: The focus of preventive maintenance (PM) programmes in industry is shifting from a pure statistical basis to online condition monitoring. Examines the shortcomings of statistical‐based PM which are contributing to this shift, and the potential benefits of and current research issues within condition‐based PM. Notes that statistics and quality control techniques will continue to play a critical role in this evolution.

“…The identification and implementation of the appropriate maintenance policy will enable the managers to avoid premature replacement costs, maintain stable production capabilities, and prevent the deterioration of the system and its components. “…This maintenance strategy is often called time-based preventive maintenance. For performing time-based preventive maintenance, we need to have a decision support system and it is often difficult to define the most effective maintenance intervals (Mann et al, 1995). There are, however, many cases when time-based maintenance strategies are implemented and most machines are maintained with a substantial amount of useful life remaining (Mechefske & Wang, 2003).…”

“…Traditional preventive maintenance models are using policies such as age replacement and block replacement (Reineke et al, 1999). One of the disadvantages of the PM is that PM is only economical where the standard deviation of the failure population is small (Mann et al, 1995). The other critical aspects considering PM are the lack of decision support systems and insufficient historical data (see Dekker, 1996;Al-Najjar and Alsyouf, 2003).…”
