Vehicular networking applications often use multi-hop wireless broadcasting as a primary data dissemination mechanism. Therefore, protocols that efficiently and thoroughly propagate application data while adapting to a wide range of network density, vehicle distribution pattern, channel quality, and other conditions are critical for vehicular communications. Here, we design the Statistical Vehicular Broadcast (SVB) protocol to efficiently distribute data via multi-hop broadcast in vehicular networks.First, we present an automated optimization technique for the design of threshold functions in statistical broadcasting methods. Next, we compare and analyze known statistical techniques, including different fundamental methods, assessment delay algorithms, and failsafe mechanisms. All combinations of these techniques are given threshold functions optimized using the proposed automated procedure then are evaluated in a wide range of simulations. High-level statistical design principles and recommendations are established based on analysis of these results. Finally, we apply those principles to design SVB. It is evaluated in JiST/SWANS and is shown to achieve a high target reachability level while consuming less bandwidth than similar protocols across urban and highway vehicular networking scenarios.

High relative node velocity and high active node density have presented challenges to existing routing approaches within highly scaled ad hoc wireless networks, such as Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANET). Efficient routing requires finding optimum route with minimum delay, updating it on availability of a better one, and repairing it on link breakages. Current routing protocols are generally focused on finding and maintaining an efficient route, with very less emphasis on route update. Adaptive route update usually becomes impractical for dense networks due to large routing overheads. This paper presents an adaptive route update approach which can provide solution for any baseline routing protocol. The proposed adaptation eliminates the classification of reactive and proactive by categorizing them as logical conditions to find and update the route.

Multi-hop wireless broadcast is a critical component in ad-hoc wireless networks. Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) in particular utilize broadcast as a primary communication mechanism in many applications. Because of their simplicity, statistical broadcasting methods have been adopted in several VANET broadcasting schemes. However, it is difficult to develop analytical models of these protocols, therefore no results are known proving reachability characteristics for them like there are for topological protocols such as Multi-Point Relaying (MPR).Therefore, we describe a technique to design statistical broadcasting protocols with threshold curves that give a target level of reachability with a desired confidence level. We model the distribution of reachability in a statistical protocol using the Pareto distribution which is then used to estimate the confidence with which a given threshold value will provide reachability exceeding the application-specific target.We apply this technique to develop a protocol based on the distance-to-mean method that meets a target reachability of 99% with 95% confidence. Evaluations using JiST/SWANS verify the protocol's performance.
