Statistical Characteristics of Raindrop Size Distribution in the Meiyu Season Observed in Eastern China

Abstract: Characteristics of raindrop size distribution (DSD) during the Meiyu season are studied using ground-based disdrometer measurements carried out in eastern China (Nanjing) from 2009 to 2011. The observational spectra are divided into convective and stratiform types. The results show that the histograms of the logarithm of the generalized intercept parameter (log10NW) and mass-weighted mean diameter of raindrops (Dm) are negatively and positively skewed, respectively, for both convective and stratiform rain. The… Show more

“…Chen et al . [] investigated DSDs in the Baiu (called “Meiyu” in China) period in eastern China. Their stratiform rain, however, was weaker than that in the present study (<10 mm h −1 ), giving a smaller mass‐weighted mean diameter and a smaller N w than the mean D 0 r and N w r of the present study.…”

“…[] examined the statistical characteristics of DSDs during the Meiyu season at Nanjing China, using 3 year observations from a first‐generation one‐dimensional (1‐D) laser‐optical Particle Size Velocity (PARSIVEL) disdrometer manufactured by OTT Germany. Their results show that the concentration of raindrops is slightly lower, and the median raindrop diameter is higher than those observed in some other subtropical locations and even during Baiu (Meiyu is named Baiu in Japan) in Japan [ Bringi et al ., ; Chen et al ., ].
