Introduction: Anemia is a significant health problem among adolescent girls. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, related factors, and knowledge about anemia among adolescent girls in a remote area of western Rajasthan. Methods: In a rural area of western Rajasthan, a cross-sectional study of 625 adolescent girls aged 11 to 19 years was carried out. Participants completed a questionnaire that included sociodemographic, clinical, and knowledge questions about anemia and its related factors. An HemoCue was used for hemoglobin analysis and anemia diagnosis. Results: Anemia was found in 56.32% ( n = 352) of the recruited population, with a mean of 9.92 (SD = 1.40). Mild, moderate, and severe anemia were found in 29.12%, 22.24%, and 4.96% of the participants, respectively. Girls aged 11 to 14 (AOR = 3.63, 95% CI: 1.76–6.38, P value = 0.042) and those with lower socioeconomic status (AOR = 4.37, 95% CI: 1.39–8.25, P value = 0.022) were more likely to have anemia than those of older age and higher socioeconomic status. Anemia was less prevalent in only one child/no siblings (AOR = 0.36, 95% CI: 0.16–0.73, P value = 0.041), and more prevalent in girls having less than 21 days of menstruation cycle (AOR = 5.37, 95% CI: 2.38–9.63, P value = 0.013), and 21 to 25 days of menstruation cycle (AOR = 3.81, 95% CI: 1.27–5.94, P value = 0.027). A total of 39.84% stated that anemia was caused by iron deficiency, followed by improper diet (32.64%). Furthermore, 56.32% agreed that the most common symptoms of anemia were weakness, and 51.36% of girls were told that anemia was treated with iron supplementation and a balanced diet (39.68%). Green leafy vegetables were considered a good source of iron by 56.48%, and 53.28% were educated about anemia by a teacher, followed by books (45.44%) and media (43.36%). Conclusion: The study shows high prevalence of anemia among adolescent females in the remote area of western Rajasthan. To improve girls health, it is necessary to increase their knowledge, attitudes, and practices in this area. Educational intervention and routine health check-up would be excellent ways to accomplish this.

Microscopic, molecular authentications, and flavonoid contents in selected bauhinia species and pharmacognostic specifications of bauhinia malabarica leaves

There are more than 40 Bauhinia species throughout Thailand. Many pharmacologically active compounds have been reported, particularly flavonoids such as quercetin and its glycoside (quercitrin). This study aimed to characterize 20 Bauhinia species throughout Thailand using microscopic, molecular analysis as well as quercetin and quercitrin quantification. The pharmacognostic specification of B. malabarica leaf which has been used in Thai's remedies was established. Twenty Bauhinia species leaves were collected from 3 places throughout Thailand. The lamina of fresh mature leaves were microscopically evaluated for the stomatal number, stomatal index, palisade ratio, trichome number, trichome index, and epidermal cell area. The anatomy of midrib transverse sections were illustrated. ISSR-PCR was performed to classify these Bauhinia species. Preliminary quantification of quercetin and quercitrin in 20 Bauhinia species were done using RP-HPLC. Dried mature leaves were exhaustively extracted with 95% ethanol using Soxhlet apparatus. The extracts were injected to Inersil? ODS-3 C18 column and eluted by 0.5% phosphoric acid and methanol (1 : 1) at 35 ?C. Photo-diode array detector was set at 255 nm. Pharmacognostic specification of B. malabarica dried leaves collected from 15 places throughout Thailand was determined for the contents of loss on drying, water, total ash, acid insoluble ash, extractive matter as well as active compounds (quercetin and quercitrin). Chemical fingerprint of the ethanolic extracts was performed by TLC. All twenty Bauhinia species showed paracytic stomata type. B. aureifolia, B. bracteata, B. integrifolia, B, lakhonensis, B. purpurea, B. scandens, B. strychnifolia, B. variegata, and B. winitii were amphistomatic. Unicellular and multicellular nonglandular trichomes were found except B. integrifolia, B. pulla, B. scandens, B. sirindhorniae, B. strychnifolia, and B. winitii contained no trichomes. B. winitii showed two layers of palisade cells at upper epidermis. B. purpurea displayed the highest numbers of stomata (1120 1208 per mm2). B. saccocalyx had trichome number upto 200 per mm2 of lower epidermis. The anatomical characteristics of the midribs were illustrated. Their uniqueness could be used for species identification. Six ISSR primers produced 100% polymorphic DNA bands. A dendrogram generated by UPGMA could classify Bauhinia species in this study especially B. malabarica. Phytochemical analysis revealed quercetin and/or quercitrin contents in dried leaves of these 20 Bauhinia species. The highest contents of quercetin and quercitrin were found in B. malabarica. Pharmacognostic specification of B. malabarica dried leaves revealed the loss on drying, total ash, acid insoluble ash, and water contents should be not more than 8.00, 7.08, 1.79, and 8.28 g/100 g while ethanol and water soluble extractive matters should be not less than 13.78 and 16.47 g/100 g of dried leaves respectively. TLC-fingerprint was demonstrated. The contents of quercetin and quercitrin were 0.1796 ? 0.0678 and 0.3833 ? 0.2138 g/100 g of dried leaves, respectively.

Nutritional Status of Reproductive Ethnic Woman Living in Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh: Influence of Socio-economic and Nutritional Factors

Aim This cross-sectional study assessed the nutritional status of ethnic reproductive women aged between 15-40 years, comprising 85 lactating women (LW) and 86 non-pregnant-non-lactating women (NPNLW) who lived in various parts of three hilly districts (Bandarban, Khagrachari and Rangamati) of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHTs) of Bangladesh. Materials and Method Research tool was pretested semi-structured questionnaire for this observational study. Anthropometric indices like weight, height and mid-upper-arm-circumference (MUAC) were used in assessing the nutritional status. Results Most (44.4%) of the ethnic women were Marma, followed by Chakma (39.8%), Bam (8.2%) and Tripura (5.8%). No significant (P>0.05) differences were observed in socio-economic variables between LW and NPNLW. Overall, mean age of the women was 28 (±7.2) years; mean family income was 18,822.2 (±3091) BDT and majority (86%-87%) were reported to be food secured throughout the year. Mean Dietary calorie (2631±798 kcal) intake of both groups were up to the mark according to the recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) and most (80.3%-86%) of them also possessed good nutritional knowledge. However, no significant (P>0.05) differences were observed in dietary calorie intake and nutritional knowledge score between two groups of women. Overall, most (68.4%) of the women had normal body max index (BMI kg/m2), 11.7% were found to be undernourished or thin and 19.9% were overweight. It was noticed that better nutritional status of LW and NPNLW were significantly associated with literacy (P<0.05), occupancy in household chores (P<0.05), better income (P<0.05), food security (P<0.05), recommended calorie intake level (P<0.05) and better nutritional knowledge score (P<0.05). Conclusion This study showed that vast majority of the ethnic reproductive women of CHTs are in better nutritional status with normal BMI (kg/m2) and daily calorie intake according to RDA. Most of them were food secured and their nutritional knowledge score was also up to the mark. Better socio-economic condition, nutritional knowledge and accurate calorie intake play a vital role in achieving healthy nutritional status of the two women groups of CHTs.
