“…Together with Panopea generosa, another geoduck with a distribution in Mexico along the north-central portion of the Pacific coast of the Baja peninsula, a 1,200-t/y fishery is supported, yielding between $18 million and $30 million (Caldero´n-Aguilera et al 2010). Because P. globosa accounts for approximately 75% of the regionÕs production of geoducks, systematic studies about its current fishery status, population dynamics, reproductive cycle, and growth models within its natural habitat have been initiated in the past decade (Arago´n-Noriega et al 2007, Caldero´n-Aguilera et al 2010, Cortez-Lucero et al 2011, Arago´n-Noriega et al 2012. The level of fishing pressure exerted on both species of Panopea, combined with their relatively slow rate of growth to a commercial size, has resulted in initiatives and research efforts focused on the hatchery production of P. globosa for the purpose of restocking natural populations.…”

“…The Pacific geoduck, Panopea generosa , is one of the two species of this genus in Mexico, and contributes about 25% of the fishery (Aragón‐Noriega, Alcántara‐Razo, Calderon‐Aguilera & Sánchez‐Fourcade, ). P. generosa together with P. globosa sustain a fishery of 1,200–1,400 tons/year, equivalent to a gross income between US$ 18 million and 30 million dollars (Aragon‐Noriega et al, 2012; Calderon‐Aguilera, Aragón‐Noriega, Hand & Moreno‐Rivera, ).…”

“…San Felipe had the largest effective population size-an observation in line with the fact that most of the Panopea globosa commercial catch inside the Gulf of California originate from the coast of Baja California near San Felipe (Arago´n-Noriega et al 2012). Metapopulation dynamics influenced by strong directionality provided by ocean currents suggest that management strategies that include no-take zones or fishery refugia would be more effective at upstream locations compared with downstream sites ).…”

“…From 2002 to 2009, the east coast of Baja California contributed 41% of the capture (Ramı´rez-Fe´lix et al 2012). Two main aggregations have been identified for commercial and experimental fisheries in the Upper Gulf of California: San Felipe, Baja California, and Puerto Pen˜asco, Sonora (Arago´n-Noriega et al 2012, Ramı´rez-Fe´lix et al 2012. A third commercial aggregation is found in the Central Gulf of California near Guaymas, Sonora (Arago´n-Noriega et al 2007, Arambula-Pujol et al 2008.…”
