Status of sablefish, Anoplopoma fimbria, aquaculture

Abstract: Sablefish, Anoplopoma fimbria (also called black cod), is a long-lived marine species with wide distribution extending from Baja California to Alaska, the Bering Sea, and through to the eastern coast of Japan. The landed weight of sablefish in the U.S. commercial fisheries is not large compared with other species; however, the exceptional value of sablefish has ranked it high compared with other species such as pollock, sockeye salmon, and Pacific cod. Sablefish are high in omega-3 fatty acids and have white f… Show more

“…Several research efforts and commercial projects are underway to establish sablefish brood-stock, larval rearing techniques, feeds, as well as the development of net-pen and landlocked recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) [ 6 12 ]. Investing in this emerging aquaculture industry brings new opportunities to aquaculture communities and a socioeconomically sensitive approach to satisfy market demands and create jobs beyond what limited catch permits can achieve [ 13 , 14 ].…”

“…Method of capture likely influenced this variation, as trawl catches contained a higher proportion of ‘soft’ fish compared to longlines and pots, and no trawling was conducted during the summer [ 16 ]. Additionally, fish were sampled down to a depth of 988 m. Sablefish spawn from winter to spring, at depths of 800 m. and deeper [ 80 , 81 ]. Seasonal migration of adult fish to deeper spawning grounds could add to the observed effect.…”
