Steam Injection Project in Heavy-Oil Diatomite

Abstract: Summary A steam injection project was conducted in diatomite containing heavy, biodegraded oil (12°API, ?3,000 cp) in the South Belridge field, Kern County, California. The diatomite interval tested (the San Joaquin, Etchegoin, and Belridge diatomites) underlies an active steamflood in the sandstone of the Tulare formation. Initially, the test was to determine the viability of cyclic steam recovery from an unpropped, steam fractured completion in the diatomite. Four standard steam cycles were… Show more

“…Steam injection, has been applied successfully to low permeability, hydraulically fractured oil reservoirs containing both relatively light and heavy crude oil (Kumar and Beatty, 1995;Kovscek et al, 1996A&B;Murer et al, 2000). Wettability of the reservoir rock is a key factor in thermal displacement efficiency (Hoffman and Kovscek 2004).…”

“…These investigations included coring of the fractures, highly deviated observation wells transgressing the fracture, and injection of radioactive tracers. Additional experiments in the Belridge diatomite with coring and very closely-spaced offset observation wells confirmed the geometry to be a single fracture (Murer et al, 2000). Microseismic monitoring in the diatomite (Vinegar et.…”

“…Hong estimated that for the reservoir with the crude oil viscosity of 5mPa·.s, the contribution of steam distillation to the steam drive recovery was 18% [6]. Several reports on site test items of steam drive indicate that the remaining oil saturation of the steam drive region was less than 10%, the contribution of the steam distillation to the recovery was estimated at around 10% [7][8][9][10][11].…”
