Stent thrombosis rates the first year and beyond with new- and old-generation drug-eluting stents compared to bare metal stents

Abstract: ObjectivesOld-generation drug-eluting coronary stents (o-DES) have despite being safe and effective been associated with an increased propensity of late stent thrombosis (ST). We evaluated ST rates in o-DES, new-generation DES (n-DES) and bare metal stents (BMS) the first year (< 1 year) and beyond 1 year (> 1 year).MethodsWe evaluated all implantations with BMS, o-DES (Cordis Cypher, Boston Scientific Taxus Liberté and Medtronic Endeavor) and n-DES in the Swedish coronary angiography and angioplasty registry … Show more

“…Nowadays, drug-eluting stent (DES) is widely used in diabetic patients with coronary artery disease because of their lower restenosis and target lesion revascularization rates compared to bare-metal stents (BMS). However, due to incomplete endothelial coverage, DES appear to be associated with an increased risk of late and very late stent thrombosis (ST) [ 1 ]. Compared with the early generation DES, the second-generation DES significantly reduces ST as these stents are made of novel materials, and newer anti-proliferative drugs are used.…”

“…This case emphasizes the importance of cardiac monitoring and echocardiography which is of high relevance in all COVID-19 patients with rapid progression of symptoms. Stent thrombosis is a dramatic complication of coronary stenting, presenting as sudden death or acute myocardial infarction if missed or misdiagnosed [12]. An immediate revascularization is essential in order to prevent long-term cardiac impairment or death [13].…”

“…the Endeavor and the Resolute Zotarolimus stents. Endeavor, the first generation of zotarolimus is sometimes considered an o-DES 114,115 and has a drug release within weeks, whereas resolute has an extended drug delivery over several months.…”
