Step-index fibre from metal halide chalcogenide glasses

Abstract: The GeS2-Ga2S3 vitreous matrix can incorporate metal halides in its network allowing the properties of the glasses to be adjusted following the composition. In this work, different systems containing either CsCl, CsI, CdCl2, or CdI2 are investigated in order to determine the compositions having the most suitable properties for drawing a step-index fibre. Indeed, transition glass temperatures and optical parameters such as the optical band-gap, the linear and nonlinear refractive indexes are given. The preforms… Show more

“…In a recent paper, we have already determined the refractive indexes (n) of the glasses of these series. At similar x, the CdI 2 -based glasses possess a higher n [16]. In the chosen core and clad compositions, they are 2.074 and 2.039, respectively.…”

“…The syntheses of the glasses were implemented by the melt-quenching method in a vacuum sealed silica set-up. The sulfur was distilled to remove traces of carbon, hydrogen, sulfide oxide, and water [16]. After homogenization of the molten liquid at 1023 K for several hours, the rods were obtained by quenching in water at room temperature and next an annealing at a temperature below the glass transition temperature (Tg), namely Tg-15 K [17].…”

“…14,15 Nevertheless, the relatively high phonon energy in those matrix glasses can suppress MIR fluorescence output. Chalcogenide glasses are considered to be suitable MIR fluorescent materials owing to their advantages of low phonon energy, wide transmission range, and high refractive index, 16,17 so they can exhibit low non-radiation transition rate and large emission cross section. 18,19 The Ga 5 Ge 20 Sb 10 S 65 (GGSS) glass is chosen as the matrix doped with Er 3+ and Pr 3+ for enabling efficient fluorescence.…”
