A highly regioselective organocatalytic chlorosulfonylation reaction for terminal epoxides is developed. The method uses various sulfonyl chloride reagents, such as MsCl or TsCl, and is catalyzed with 4-methylpyridine N-oxide. Several sulfonylated halohydrins are obtained with reasonable to high regioselectivity and the reaction is applied to 1,2-disubstituted epoxides.
