Sterically regulated halogen‐free bifunctional ionic liquids for catalytic conversion of CO2 into cyclic carbonates

Heming Zhang,
Chan Meng,
Qian Su
et al.

Abstract: In the cycloaddition reaction of carbon dioxide (CO2) with epoxides, halogen catalysts lead to halogen loss and environmental pollution. It is necessary to design efficient and environmentally friendly catalysts. A series of halogen‐free phosphonium ionic liquids (ILs) regulated by steric hindrance were designed and synthesized. It is further used as effective catalysts for the catalytic conversion of CO2 into cyclic carbonates. The effect of different catalyst structures on catalytic activity has been investi… Show more

“…In addition, increasing the reaction temperature to 90 °C and CO 2 pressure to 10 bar (entries 19 and 20) with increased catalyst amount (3.8 mol%) results in slightly higher yields (98.3% and 96.8%, respectively) for [DMPz-6]I 2 and[DMPz-6]Br 2 catalysts, confirming the importance of sufficient catalyst concentration in the reaction system. 46 Furthermore, the selectivity remains >99% for all DPzILs catalytic activity experiments. When conducting thermogravimetric analysis to examine the thermal stability of five chosen DPzILs and determine their decomposition temperatures, it was revealed that [DMPz-6]I 2 remains intact even at a high temperature of 183 °C (Fig.…”
