Steroid hormone profile of Markhoz does (Iranian Angora) throughout estrous cycle and gestation period

Abstract: The present study aims were to determine the profiles of changes in progesterone (P4) and 17-β-estradiol (E2) in the peripheral blood of Markhoz goat (Iranian Angora) during estrous cycle, gestation, and parturition throughout natural breeding season. Gestation length averaged 145.3 ± 0.8 days, and the litter size was 1.1 ± 0.1. Birth weight ranged 2.4-2.8 and 1.5-2.5 kg in male and female kids, respectively. The mean estrous cycle lengths were 20.3 ± 0.4 and 20.9 ± 0.4 days for PGF(2α)-induced and natural cyc… Show more

“…Estrogen is the main hormone that acts in the appearance of behavioral heat in female mammalians. And also, all trends of change in estrogen in this study are in harmony with the findings from other studies on Angora and other goat breeds (Bono et al, 1983;Alaçam et al, 1999;Blaszczyk et al, 2004;Khanum et al, 2008;Talebi et al, 2012).…”

“…When Figure 1 is examined, the progesterone concentrations in female goats increase until the first half of pregnancy and then its concentration was decreased rapidly and has reached basal level after kidding. Similar results were obtained in other studies conducted to determine the progesterone concentration in goats during pregnancy (Bono et al, 1983;Kadzere et al, 1997;Gaafar et al, 2005;Khanum et al, 2008;Sogerescu et al, 2012;Talebi et al, 2012).…”

“…Moreover, the emergence of estrous behaviour accompanied by a decrease in progesterone hormone levels may reflect ovarian activity described by several researchers (Budi, 2022; Chemineau et al, 1986; Eiamvitayakorn & Rigor, 1988; Khanum et al, 2007; Panjaitan et al, 2020; Simões et al, 2006, 2007; Talebi et al, 2012; Thibier et al, 1981). Therefore, returning natural estrous behaviours or cycles in refed Kacang goats might indicate that the refeeding induced ovarian follicular development.…”
