Steroidal Glycosides from the Fruits of Solanum viarum

Abstract: Solanum viarum DUNAL (syn. S. khasianum var. chatterjeeanum, Solanaceae) is a major source of steroidal raw material, and four glycosides of solasodine and diosgenin are reported to occur in its fruits and roots, respectively. 1) As part of a continuing study of the steroidal constituents of solanaceous plants, 2) we now describe the isolation and structural elucidation of three new steroidal glycosides and seven known steroidal glycosides from the fruits of S. viarum. The MeOH extract of the fruits of S. viaru… Show more

“…In fact, it is well known that plants of the family Solanaceae are sources of secondary metabolites which act as bioactivc compounds. such as alkaloids, flavonoids and saponins that have a broad spectrum of activity (Evans et al, 1984;Eltayeb et al, 1997;Zhou et al, 2006;Ono et al, 2009;Cai et al, 2010). Tbe water extracts obtained from dry and fresh plants demonstrated the same efficacy on P. goodeyi mortality as the water extracts from the sequential solvent extraction.…”

“…The attachment of D-rhamnose and the second D-glucose moieties to carbons C-2 Gal and C-3 Gal, respectively, was confirmed from the long range correlations of their anomeric carbons (δ C 102.3, H-1 Rh and 105.9, H-1 Glc ) to the respective protons (δ H 3.77, H-2 Gal and 3.74, H-3 Gal ), respectively. The full assignment of the protons and carbons of compound 3 was further confirmed by the analysis of 2D NMR spectra ( 1 H-1 H gDQCOSY, gHSQCAD, gHMBCAD, ROESY and zTOCSY) and by comparison to the published data of the related glycosides [17,18,22,23]. Thus, the structure of compound 3 was identified as (25R)-spirost-5-en-3-…”
