STH-CFD Codes Coupled Calculations Applied to HLM Loop and Pool Systems

Abstract: This work describes the coupling methodology between a modified version of RELAP5/Mod3.3 and ANSYS Fluent CFD code developed at the University of Pisa. The described coupling procedure can be classified as "two-way," nonoverlapping, "online" coupling. In this work, a semi-implicit numerical scheme has been implemented, giving greater stability to the simulations. A MATLAB script manages both the codes, oversees the reading and writing of the boundary conditions at the interfaces, and handles the exchange of da… Show more

“…At the University of Pisa (UniPi), RELAP5 was coupled with FLUENT UDF including parallel capability, where a MATLAB‐script was written to wrap RELAP5 . It was applied for the simulation of natural and forced circulation tests and a heavy liquid metal system—TALL/3D (with a new semi‐implicit method) . At SCK‐CEN, RELAP5‐3D is coupled with FLUENT and tested using the data from the lead‐bismuth eutectic (LBE)—cooled test loop and facility .…”

“…The coupling approach between the RELAP5/Mod 3.3 and Ansys Fluent developed at the UniPi (Angelucci M. et al, 2017 uses a "non-overlapping", "two-way" coupling scheme. The overall domain is divided into regions modelled using the CFD approach (generally regions where effects of turbulence and 3D phenomena are relevant,) and other regions modelled using a system code (generally regions where two-phase flow occurs).…”

“…More specifically, studies of liquid metals flow conditions in a pool-type facility were carried out by Toti et al (2018) for the ESCAPE facility and by Papukchiev et al (2015) for the TALL 3D facility; in recent years many experimental campaigns were performed at the ENEA research centre in Brasimone (see e.g. Lorusso et al, 2018Lorusso et al, 2019 providing material for several numerical studies (Martelli et al, 2014, Angelucci et al, 2017a, Narcisi et al, 2017, Martelli et al, 2017b, Gonfiotti et al, 2018, Zwijsen et al 2019a, Zwijsen et al, 2019b. A detailed overview of the experimental and numerical works recently performed in support to the design of HLMRs is reported in the paper of Roelofs et al (2013).…”
