Still ‘Minding the Gap’ Sixteen Years Later: (Re)Storying Pro-Environmental Behaviour

Abstract: In their seminal 2002 paper, Kollmuss and Agyeman asked the important question ‘Why do people act environmentally and what are the barriers to pro-environmental behaviour?’ The article has had a remarkably high rate of readership, with 64,900 electronic views to date, and 16 years later, this question remains significant. But are environmental educators and researchers any closer to understanding why people engage in pro-environmental behaviour? For this special issue of the Australian Journal of Environmental… Show more

“…Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices have a complex non-linear relationship [35,36,37]. This should be kept in mind when devising interventions based on KAP data since K, A, and P should be considered individually despite overlaps.…”

“…However, numerous studies show that it is far too simplistic to expect a linear progression in which increased environmental knowledge leads to environmental awareness, and, finally, to environmentally friendly behavior [13,[15][16][17][18]21,22]. Environmental awareness is strong and positive in much the same way worldwide, but individual as well as collective action for sustainability is still insufficient.…”

“…Yet, the real cause of many environmental problems lies in human behavior, and it has been proven that environmental knowledge and awareness do not automatically lead to a change of action. Moreover, an exact understanding of human motivation to act in environmentally friendly ways is still missing [13][14][15][16][17][18]. Nevertheless, various recommendations about the development of successful learning-settings for ESD can be found in the existing literature [7,[19][20][21][22][23][24][25].…”
