Stimulation of Different Sectors of the Human Dorsal Premotor Cortex Induces a Shift from Reactive to Predictive Action Strategies and Changes in Motor Inhibition: A Dense Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Mapping Study

Abstract: Delayed motor tasks require timely interaction between immobility and action. The neural substrates of these processes probably reside in the premotor and motor circuits; however, fine-grained anatomical/functional information is still lacking. Participants performed a delayed simple reaction task, structured as a ready-set-go sequence, with a fixed, predictable, SET-period. Responses were given with lip movements. During the SET-period, we performed a systematic dense-mapping of the bilateral dorsal premotor … Show more

“…This task can be solved in one of two mutually-exclusive strategies: the predictive and the reactive one. More in detail, stimulation of a specific portion of the SFG induced a bias towards predictive behavior, thus replicating the data from Cattaneo and Parmigiani 2021 (Cattaneo and Parmigiani, 2021a). The effective spot was the one referred to as P03 (see Figure 1 for the location of TMS spots).…”

“…At this point, trials were classified as A) false starts (i.e., trials with response before the GO-signal, i.e., negative RTs); B) anticipatory trials (i.e., trials with RT between 0 and 170 ms) and C) reactive trials (trials with RTs > 170 ms). The value of 170 ms was chosen empirically by inspecting the average trough in the two peaks of the RT distribution, as also performed in (Cattaneo and Parmigiani, 2021b) and confirmed by the present data, as shown here in Figure 3. We then took into consideration the pool of trials within each single condition (40 trials per each active TMS site) and 120 trials for the sham, and built a ratio called "reactive index" (RI), by dividing the number of reactive trials by the total number of trials.…”
