Stimulation of Macrophage Oxygen Free Radical Production and Lymphocyte Blastogenic Response by Immunization with Porins

Abstract: Abstract:Porins were prepared from smooth strain of Salmonella typhi 0-901 and chemotype rough mutant of S. typhimurium Ra-30. Porins could significantly stimulate the immune systems of mice.

“…They have been investigated as possible adhesion molecules and virulence factors in host cell recognition. Association of porins from Salmonella with host cells triggers a variety of biological events that include induction of cell-mediated Arai 1989b, 1992) and humoral (Tabaraie et al 1994) immune responses and induction of cytokine gene expression (Galdiero et al 1998). More recently, Salmonella porins have been shown to activate cell-signaling pathways in human macrophages (Galdiero et al 2002(Galdiero et al , 2003.…”

“…The Salmonella porin OmpC (Singh et al 2000) and the porin-like OmpA (Singh et al 2003) function as immunodominant antigens when mice are immunized with live or heat-killed Salmonella serovar Typhimurium. Salmonella porins have been proposed as broad-spectrum (Tabaraie et al 1994) or serovar-specific (Matsui and Arai 1989a) vaccines.…”

“…Since the mid-1980s, a major OMP of Salmonella has been the subject of much investigation, and our earlier work has shown that porins afford protection against Salmonella infection [6][7][8][9]. Several workers have demonstrated porins to be important antigens, which elicit CMI responses through a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction, interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-g (IFN-g) production, and mitogenic effects on T and B cells [4,10].…”
