Stimuli-responsive 4-acryloylmorpholine/4-acryloylpiperidine copolymers via nitroxide mediated polymerization

Abstract: 4‐acryloylmorpholine/4‐acryloylpiperidine statistical copolymers were synthesized by nitroxide mediated polymerization (NMP) with BlocBuilder unimolecular initiator in dimethylformamide solution at 120 °C. The copolymers had narrow molecular weight distributions (dispersity Đ = 1.25–1.35, number average molecular weights Mn = 8.5–13.7 kg mol−1). The copolymer microstructure was essentially statistical (reactivity ratios r4AP = 0.81 ± 0.73, r4AM = 0.73 ± 0.68 based on non‐linear fitting of the Mayo‐Lewis equati… Show more

“…As observed in Table 2, our poly(GMA-ran-S) copolymers exhibited molar masses in the range of 21,200-23,100 g mol −1 , which is in good agreement with Mn, th = 30,000 g mol −1 , at about 70% conversion. The obtained results suggest that no side reactions occurred during the copolymerization and that this copolymerization is well-controlled, in terms of molar mass development [46,47]. NMP minimizes polymer radical concentrations for a significant period of the polymerization, diminishing irreversible termination reactions, thus resulting in narrow molar mass distributions [48].…”

“…It is observed in Table 2 that our NMP-synthesized copolymers presented number average molar masses in the range of 27,000–28,400 g mol −1 , which is in good agreement with w M n , th = 30,000 g mol −1 , at about 90% conversion. The obtained results suggest that no side reactions occurred during the copolymerization and that it is well-controlled, regarding molar mass development [ 56 , 57 ]. The synthesized P(S-co-GMA) copolymers displayed narrow Ð values, which ranged from 1.22 in the case of 35% GMA, to 1.29 when GMA content is 55%.…”

“…As a result, NMP is still a viable technique also when dealing with non‐styrenic monomers 66 . Rabyk et al 67 relied on the difference in reactivity of St and DMAEA to obtain a block‐gradient copolymer that is responsive to temperature and pH.…”
