Stimulus to Convergence in Normal and Asthenopic Subjects

Abstract: A new type of stereoscope has recently been described (Asher and Law, 1952) in which the lateral separation of the cards and their distance from the lenses may both be varied separately, thus exercising accommodation and convergence independently of each other. It was expected that when the images of the cards were at infinity, the normal orthophoric observer would find fusion easiest with the visual axes parallel. However, it was at once apparent that this was not so, since the majority of observers found it … Show more

“…Asher 1 expressed the belief that the subject's conscious estimate of the position of an object plays as important a role as does the accommodative convergence. Furthermore, he found evidence that the proximal factor predominates in patients with asthenopia and also affects the results obtained in accommodative squint with positive lenses.…”

“…The actual change in the fusion-free con¬ vergence which would result from the change in the stimulus distance of the test object from distant to near vision would be "+ "-0. “…Methods of measurement and various characteristics of the ratio are discussed by Asher 50 Theories of binocular vision are turning again toward the dominance and rivalry ideas of F. H. Verhoeff. It has practical value for refraction, according to many writers.…”
