“…No association was observed to bipolar disorder or suicidality in a Canadian family study 104 and in Canadian suicide attempters. 105 Similar negative findings were derived for Chinese mood disorder patients with suicidal history 106 or psychotic patients with suicidal behaviour. 95 Using DNA of Croatian suicide victims there was also no association between suicide and the VNTR-2 variants.…”

“…Another polymorphism influencing 5-HTT expression was identified by Ogilvie and colleagues 198 within intron 2 (STin2) and described as a 17bp VNTR polymorphism. It was reported that the STin2 polymorphism can play a role as a risk factor in MDD [198][199][200] and suicidal behaviour, 201,202 creating a synergistic effect with 5-HTTLPR. 203 The STin2 polymorphism seems to also affect antidepressant response, as reported by different authors, 85,175,182,191 and it was proposed that a STin2 10/12 genotype (where 10/12 indicates the number of repeats in the 2 alleles) may be associated with a poorer antidepressant effect, especially in Asian populations.…”

“…However, not all individuals with major depression commit suicide. Many studies have investigated factors associated with suicide in MDD patients, such as psychiatric comorbidities,67 genetic factors,89 melancholic features of MDD,1011 biomarkers,12 and environmental factors 13. Although some studies suggested that somatic symptoms are related to suicide,1415 gender differences regarding somatic symptoms and suicide are still poorly understood in MDD patients.…”
