Stochastic Resonance Training Improves Balance and Musculoskeletal Well-Being in Office Workers: A Controlled Preventive Intervention Study

Abstract: Sixty-two office workers in a Swiss federal department were randomly assigned to a training and a control group. While the training group was instructed to complete 3 stochastic resonance whole-body vibration (SR-WBV) exercises every week for 4 weeks, the control group received no treatment. During this time all participants answered a daily questionnaire concerning their surefootedness, sense of balance, musculoskeletal well-being, and muscle relaxation. Before and after the 4-week SR-WBV intervention, balanc… Show more

“…We also assessed other work-related risk factors (prolonged sitting), job resources (participation in decision-making), and individual risk factors (sex, smoking, exercise, body mass index, maladaptive back beliefs). This study used secondary data from an organizational health intervention study that took place in 2017 (Faes et al, 2018).…”

“…The idea of a study in office workers was presented to the top management of a Swiss federal department (Faes et al, 2018), who , in turn , gave their employees the opportunity to complete all tasks relating to this study within their working hours. All office workers from a one of their administration departments ( N = 101), which worked in the same office building, joined the study-presentation in their team meeting and were asked to participate.…”

“…before and after the exercise. 2,5 Participants answered on a rating-scale from 0 being "a lot worse than usual" to 100 being "much better than usual", and with 50 being "same as always". No practical tests to determine the balance were carried out.…”

“…Also, SR-WBV increases surefootedness, balance and postural control for example in nurses or office workers. [5][6][7] The positive effects described above are supported by particularly good compliance rates on the part of study participants. In a hospital based trial there was a 100% participation rate.…”
