Stochastic transitions in a bistable reaction system on the membrane

Abstract: Transitions between steady states of a multi-stable stochastic system in the perfectly mixed chemical reactor are possible only because of stochastic switching. In realistic cellular conditions, where diffusion is limited, transitions between steady states can also follow from the propagation of travelling waves. Here, we study the interplay between the two modes of transition for a prototype bistable system of kinase-phosphatase interactions on the plasma membrane. Within microscopic kinetic Monte Carlo simul… Show more

“…All of the considered models introduced hereafter are analyzed by means of spatial kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations [37,38], Molecules are placed on discrete sites of a two-dimensional triangular lattice which forms a square domain with periodic boundary conditions. The molecules diffuse freely by hopping to adjacent empty lattice sites.…”

“…In this case, the front can be established in the opening called axon hilock, as in the solution shown in Fig 2E (subpanel E2). As demonstrated in [ 34 ], polarizing traveling fronts can arise also due to stochastic fluctuations, which occur more eagerly in narrow parts of the domain.…”

“…In this subsection we analyze events of switching between metastable states in a bistable reaction-diffusion system that has been analyzed previously by means of on-lattice kinetic Monte Carlo simulations in Ref. [21]. The system contains autophosphorylating bisphosphorylatable kinases K and phosphatases P, that react as follows:…”
