Digital transformation and digitalisation are rapidly affecting the society. The gradually increasing applications of different types of AI into solutions and services are welcome, but there are associated risks. These include, for example, within human aspects of care undermining fundamental rights, ethical considerations, sustainability, and policies and regulations. This change permeates every societal level, but it is especially evident in the healthcare sector due to the ageing population and shortage of professionals. This situation also places pressure on the development of competencies among healthcare professionals. A human-centered approach in design and design methods can promote the development of AI-based solutions in transdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary processes encompassing numerous stakeholders, scientific orientations, and perspectives. There is a need for research and evaluation of Human-Centered Design (HCD) processes and design methods to develop and gain more insights for future development.This study was conducted as research through design. It aimed to elucidate the application and insights gained from the adopted Service design process for AI-enabled services and HCD approach while developing AI-empowered solution, Voima-chatbot. One of this research's main conclusions and realization is the shift from purely HCD towards Life-Centered design of AI-enabled solutions with a human-in-the-loop. In addition, this project increased the understanding of the deep importance of having a transdisciplinary dialogue with developers during the process of developing digital well-being devices and combining different professional competencies to achieve the best working solutions.

Self-evaluated competences of multidisciplinary students before and after professional specialisation education in digital social and health care services

The integration of separate service systems, digitalisation, demographic changes, and staff shortages has increased the need for systematic and flexible skills development in social and health care services. In today’s working life, learning and development take place in ecosystems. This study aimed to evaluate and identify differences between students’ self-assessed competences and their beliefs about the importance of competence areas before and after professional specialisation education (PSE). The research questions were: 1) Was there any difference in students’ self-evaluated level of multidisciplinary competences before and after professional specialisation education? 2) Based on students’ self-evaluations, was there any difference between the multidisciplinary competences they considered important before and after professional specialisation education? Analysis of variance (ANOVA) test and paired t-tests were used to examine the differences in the subjects’ spontaneous responses about whether they had experienced a change in their competences after undertaking specialisation education. In the initial survey (N = 274), the student respondent group was 180, and the total number of student pairs was 65. The initial and final measurements of the 65 students who responded to the follow-up survey were therefore comparable. Four-point Likert scales were used in the questionnaires. The modified questionnaire was designed so that students answered each of the competences at two levels from their own perspectives. First, they described how important the acquisition of the skills described in this sentence would be for their own professional competence. Then, they assessed their current level of competence in relation to the sentence in question. There were no statistical differences (p>0.05) between measurements taken before and after education in most of the qualification statements describing importance. There were statistical differences (p<0.05) between the initial (before education) and post-training measurements (after education) for all statements describing self-assessment competences. According to this study, even micro-credentials promoted learning. In learning, ecosystem and perceived importance support the level of digital maturity of organisations.

Wicked Strategies: Comparing Evolved Double Diamond and PPG’s Framework for Strategy Creation for Wicked Problems in Service Design

Wicked problems are present in many of the services that service designers design as in healthcare, social work or sustainable transportation. Camillus (2008) argued that wicked problems often increase as an organisation faces constant change or unprecedented challenges. These challenges need models on how to tackle them and in this article we will compare the Evolved Double Diamond model with PPG Industries’ framework for responding to wicked problems, as presented by Camillus (2008). Both models are used to create a strategy for the context of wicked problems: a new Evolved Double Diamond model that addresses especially complex problems. It is good to look at models critically and understand their similarities and differences for possible future development of strategies.
