STR120: A Web-Based Board Game for Aiding Students in Review of the Structural Theory of Organic Compounds

Abstract: This paper provides information about a multilingual (Portuguese, English, Spanish, Italian, and French) virtual card game for computers and smartphones. Facing the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, this game allows students to play remotely or face-to-face with friends in a fun and cooperative environment and review the topics related to the structural theory of organic compounds simultaneously. Brazilian and Italian undergraduate students played and evaluated the game positively. Also, learning ass… Show more

“…At this point, we want to highlight the differences between the Vikings Game and the Space Race Game, 44 which was published recently in this Journal. Both games address the same content (covered in the Physical Chemistry textbook by Peter Atkins, whose Portuguese version is adopted in Brazilian high schools and colleges); however the Space Race Game is a competitive game that uses true−false questions.…”

“…Most recently, we published two papers , in this Journal covering the structural theory of organic compounds, including resonance, but not specifically on this theme. This scenario motivated us to create an educational game, 7 to Win, that would help students review organic species’ resonance concepts and develop their skills in drawing resonance structures.…”

“…Many researchers have developed games for chemical and biochemical education. Examples include card games to aid memorization, quiz games, , board games with chemical challenges, escape rooms, narrative games, , murder mysteries, , and the use of ChemDraw as a game . Game writing has been used as an educational tool, while Lego and Lego Serious Play have been used to teach scientific concepts.…”
