Crystalline trypsin was irradiated in oxygen-free suspension media of methanol, ethanol and n-heptane with 60Co-gamma-rays at 77 K or 273 K. Measurements with ESR and activity determinations revealed no influence of ethanol and n-heptane on the formation of free radicals and inactivation of trypsin. Especially, the results are independent on the polarity of the suspension media and correspond to an irradiation of trypsin in vacuum. On the other hand, methanol leads to a decay of radiation induced radicals and to an increased inactivation. The results are discussed in comparison to analogous experiments carried out with ultra-violet light.

Gegenüber den in Metall‐Ammoniak‐Lösungen existierenden solvatisierten Elektronen sind in Wasser gelöste Elektronen außerordentlich instabil und deshalb lange Zeit unbeachtet geblieben. Ihre Entdeckung bei der Radiolyse von Wasser hat einen Anstoß zur Untersuchung der Chemie dieses einfachsten Radikals gegeben. Die strahlenchemische Erzeugung solvatisierter Elektronen hat sich als eine besonders geeignete Methode erwiesen, um ihre zum Teil diffusionskontrolliert ablaufenden Reduktionsreaktionen mit vielen Partnern qualitativ und quantitativ zu erforschen. In einigen Fällen ist es gelungen, die dabei entstehenden kurzlebigen Reaktionsprodukte (Radikalanionen) optisch und ESR‐spektroskopisch zu identifizieren. Die Ähnlichkeit der physikalischen und chemischen Eigenschaften von in Lösung solvatisierten und in fester Phase stabilisierten Elektronen zwingt zu der Schlußfolgerung, daß beide Spezies identisch sind.
