Strain measurement based on SMS fiber structure sensor and OTDR

Abstract: This article presents a strain measurement method using a singlemode‐multimode‐singlemode fiber structure sensor and an optical time domain reflectometer. A strain measurement range of 0–1000 με can be achieved with a resolution of better than 10 με. Using this method, a quasi‐distributed strain measurement can be carried out which is useful for a bridge or a civil structure strain monitoring. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. “…In this paper, we propose a novel configuration based on the SMS fiber structure and an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR)-based interrogation technique for a long-range displacement measurement. The use of the OTDR as an interrogator for the SMS fiber structure strain and temperature sensor was proposed previously, and the capability of quasi-distributed or multi-point measurement was demonstrated [11,12]. In our configuration, the SMS fiber structure was installed on a flexible plate between two permanent poles.…”

“…Devices that use core diameter mismatch (CDM) such as single‐mode‐multimode‐single‐mode (SMS) fibers have been just suggested as fiber sensors in response to their simple manufacturing and inexpensive cost . These SMS sensors are developed by splicing a piece of multimode fiber (MMF) between two single mode fibers (SMFs) …”

“…25 Devices that use core diameter mismatch (CDM) such as single-mode-multimode-single-mode (SMS) fibers have been just suggested as fiber sensors in response to their simple manufacturing and inexpensive cost. [26][27][28][29] These SMS sensors are developed by splicing a piece of multimode fiber (MMF) between two single mode fibers (SMFs). 27,30,31 This work proposes an SMS fiber strain sensor and a simple power meter-based interrogation technique, since only the optical power changes as strain is applied in this sensor.…”

“…Finally, a significant function of the OTDR is to enable multiplexing [7][8][9] and remote sensing [8][9][10] interrogation. OTDR trace loss [8,[11][12][13] or reflection peak variation [7,10] are the most attractive techniques for interrogation when OTDR is used. In the case of the OTDR trace loss and considering multiplexing and remote sensing, there is a compromise between the number of sensors to be multiplexed and the distance between sensors since the loss introduced by the sensors will be a serious limitation to the system.…”
