Strategic Actions to Value, Conserve, and Restore the Natural Capital of Megadiversity Countries: The Case of Mexico

Abstract: Decisionmakers need updated, scientifically sound and relevant information to implement appropriate policy measures and make innovative commitments to halt biodiversity loss and improve human well-being. Here, we present a recent science-based synthesis on the biodiversity and ecosystem services of Mexico, intended to be a tool for policymakers. We describe the methodological approach used to undertake such an assessment and highlight the major findings. Organized into five volumes and originally written in Sp… Show more

“…Government is not the only agent interested in freshwater conservation, both academia and NGOs participate in different managing and conservation programs as well as in integrating this information, including their analyses on several problems and aspects of conservation, and the private sector aids with financing and practical measures. In this regard, the invitation to participate and unite efforts to understand and conserve freshwater ecosystems and their dynamics should be open to all stakeholders (Sarukhán et al, 2015). In this exercise we have done an effort to bring all possible expertise (16 experts from the environmental sector, 14 from NGOs and 22 from academia) and we also hope these results are considered and incorporated in their programs of work.…”

“…However, the applicability of indicator taxa is reliant on the existence and availability of data. Although Mexico is considered to be a pioneer in biodiversity informatics (Soberón & Peterson, 2004), there are still considerable knowledge gaps and an uneven distribution of the information available (Sarukhan et al, 2015).…”
