Strategic real option and flexibility analysis for nuclear power plants considering uncertainty in electricity demand and public acceptance

Abstract: Nuclear power is an important energy source especially in consideration of CO2 emissions and global warming. Deploying nuclear power plants, however, may be challenging when uncertainty in long-term electricity demand and more importantly public acceptance are considered. This is true especially for emerging economies (e.g., India, China) concerned with reducing their carbon footprint in the context of growing economic development, while accommodating a growing population and significantly changing demographic… Show more

“…A generalization of the proposed model could apply to the design of flexible EMS systems, or to more general multi-facility engineering systems, as done in (Cardin et al, 2017b). The issues of determining whether it is feasible or when it is optimal to exercise the flexibilities in real-world operations and from an implementation standpoint are also important, and should be addressed in future work, such as done in (Cardin et al, 2015a).…”

“…It is also a solution to countries with less raw supply of power producing sources [20]. However, despite of its benefits to a country and to the future generation, the perception and acceptance of the people must also be a consideration [21,22]. In medical, x-ray has been used for many years after it was discovered by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895.…”

“…Concerns about nuclear proliferation, waste management that is still an open issue, the shortage of qualified workforce in the reactor construction and high or uncertain costs (at least in some areas of the world) are the other main points representing an obstacle to nuclear diffusion (Ahearne, 2011). The long construction time (8-10 years) and operational life of plants (40+ years) make the uncertainty concerning electricity demand and public acceptance particularly relevant in discouraging investments (Cardin et al, 2017).…”
