Strategies for Enhanced Crop Resistance to Insect Pests

Abstract: Insect pests are responsible for substantial crop losses worldwide through direct damage and transmission of plant diseases, and novel approaches that complement or replace broad-spectrum chemical insecticides will facilitate the sustainable intensification of food production in the coming decades. Multiple strategies for improved crop resistance to insect pests, especially strategies relating to plant secondary metabolism and immunity and microbiome science, are becoming available. Recent advances in metaboli… Show more

“…Moreover, most spiders are generalist predators, and are therefore adept at killing both pollinators and natural predators of pest insects, making them unsuitable for biocontrol. However, this does not discount the possibility that individual insecticidal toxins found in the venom of spiders might have application in the control of insect pests …”

“…During evolution, a certain balance between herbivores, their plant hosts and pathogens/parasites has been reached. Using RNAi as a gene manipulator, key herbivore genes involved in maintaining this homeostasis could be targeted . We define such RNAi as ‘RNAi plus ’.…”

“…Herbivores are often involved in an evolutionary arms race against the defense mechanisms of plants and infections by pathogens and parasites. [47][48][49] During evolution, a certain balance between herbivores, their plant hosts and pathogens/parasites has been reached. Using RNAi as a gene manipulator, key herbivore genes involved in maintaining this homeostasis could be targeted.…”
