Strategies in Organic Synthesis for Condensed Arenes, Coronene, and Graphene

Abstract: Graphene-type structures are without doubt one of the most exciting carbon-based materials known. Although graphene is mostly prepared by physical methods (CVD, exfoliation), organic synthesis represents a powerful alternative to access graphene-type structures in a selective and reproducible manner. Although graphene has been hyped as a "new" material, the resemblance to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) offers a long history in organic chemistry on which all new endeavors are built. In this review we d… Show more

“…Well-established methods to produce graphene include micromechanical cleaving, solution-phase exfoliation from graphite, , chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and organic synthesis-based methods. , Micromechanical cleaving technique, also known as the “Scotch tape” or peel-off method, tends to produce graphene with the best quality and the least amount of structural and compositional defects . However, this method offers only limited control over the number of mechanically peeled-off layers, and it is not suitable for mass manufacturing of graphene.…”

“…In recent years, the interest in nanographene chemistry has produced a range of extended π-conjugated systems, many of which contain heterocyclic rings. Recent advances in nanographene synthesis were reviewed by Yan and Li, Tran-Van and Wegner, Wu and co-workers, and the Müllen group . An account of the chemistry of contorted polycyclic aromatics was published by Nuckolls and co-workers .…”

“…Indeed, this would be the first three dimensional hexabenzocoronene (HBC) molecule. HBCs are interesting because of their supramolecular behavior and electronical properties [ 46 48 ]. However, the cyclodehydrogenation reaction on this molecule proved to be quite challenging due to ring strain and led to a complex mixture of partially dehydrogenated and chlorinated products.…”
