Farm-level investment in digital tools is often viewed as a necessary part of the agroecological transition. However, its actual relevance remains unclear due to currently ambiguous definitions of farm investments in general and equipment investments in particular. We conducted a systematic review of the farm investment literature to characterize the different categories of digital tools investments seen and to determine how often the environment is considered in this field of research. A total of 131 articles met our eligibility criteria and were subject to further analysis. First, we found that research on farm investments has looked at general farm investments, investments in combined factors of production, and investments in specific factors of production. Second, we discovered that there are four main investment categories for farm equipment (including digital tools). Third, we noted that few studies have addressed the environmental implications of investing in digital tools. Our findings emphasize that, to facilitate the agroecological transition, it will be important to promote broader strategies that encourage farmers to invest in digital tools.

Animal welfare is a multidimensional concept that comprises animal health, mental state and natural living conditions and plays an essential role in dairy production. On dairy farms, animal welfare can be assessed with different available protocols. The goal of this study was to describe the animal welfare strengths and hazards of dairy farms in Argentina using the Welfare Quality® protocol as a framework. We conducted a literature search using the Scopus database to find articles related to the measures included in the protocol for Argentinean farms. Furthermore, we included data from national statistics. The data available were grouped according to the four principles of the protocol: good feeding, good housing, good health, and appropriate behavior. The results suggest that cows are well nourished; however, water provision is limited because grazing cows need to walk long distances, between 244 m and 460 m, to access a water point. Heat stress is a notable constraint affecting the welfare of cows, as the temperature-humidity index is greater than 72 for at least 100 days during the year. The prevalence of lameness and downer cows was estimated to be 2.2% and 0.7%, respectively, which are below the thresholds for ensuring good welfare. The annual average somatic cell count was 385,000/ml, close to the cutoff recommended for good health. The mortality rate of the cows was higher than recommended. The main strength of Argentinean dairy farms in relation to animal welfare is access to pasture throughout the year for 90% of the farms.

La producción de leche bovina se realiza en sistemas productivos complejos qué requieren el constante seguimiento de los factores que los interpelan. Así mismo el sector necesita comprender el estancamiento de la producción anual a nivel nacional, caracterizado por caída en el número de establecimientos y el rodeo, y una eficiencia productiva progresiva. Esto conlleva el estudio de los determinantes tanto del desempeño económico (DE) como productivo (DP) de los establecimientos, qué podrían permitir mejorar su competitividad y junto a otros factores exógenos, colaborar para superar esta prolongada etapa de estabilidad productiva. Partiendo de una tipología de tambos de la Región Pampeana, se analiza el comportamiento de variables (rentabilidad, costo de producción y productividad de la tierra) y su interrelación. Finalmente, se conforman y analizan modelos econométricos flexibles que aproximan la estimación del desempeño económico y productivo de los sistemas bajo estudio, a partir de factores que pueden ser determinantes para su evolución. Los mejores modelos resultaron de aquellos que utilizaron como inputs a variables sintéticas (componentes principales), en comparación a los que hicieron uso y selección de variables propias de los sistemas, subsanando inconvenientes de multicolinealidad. El uso de variables instrumentales podría contribuir en la resolución de la multicausalidad presente entre los factores de los modelos analizados.
