Strategies to Improve Biocompatibility of Dental Materials

Abstract: Adverse reactions to dental materials occur and public interest in this topic has increased during recent decades. Thus, improving the biocompatibility of dental materials is necessary and must be based on several strategies. First, a strategy for improving the administrative and technical conditions for material certification processes should be included, such as the development of in vitro tests with enhanced predictability of the generated data for use in the clinic. Second, research on material/tissue inte… Show more

“…Bleaching is based upon hydrogen peroxide as the active agent, which may be applied directly or released by a chemical reaction from carbamide peroxide 2) . The latter acts as a deposit material releasing hydrogen peroxide and urea 3) . While carbamide peroxide formulations are mostly used in supervised home bleaching, higher concentrations of hydrogen peroxide up to 35% are recommended for in-office bleaching and non-vital bleaching.…”

“…As there is a well-documented model for the assessment of bone healing, experimental studies on the rat skull is the gold standard for testing tissue reaction to root canal filling material [3,13,14]. For each group, the control orifice was 1 of the 4 orifices made in the calvaria, which was free of any tested material.…”
