Strategies to Improve Counselor Educators and Students' Cultural Engagement Skills

Abstract

Providing opportunities for master's level counseling students to improve cultural competence skills in their coursework does not need to be difficult. To produce culturally competent and aware counselors, counselor educators can incorporate intentional activities into students' workload. In this chapter, the multicultural and social justice counseling competencies serve as a framework for introducing opportunities for students to grow in self and client awareness, counseling relationships, and social justice and advocacy efforts. Each section outlines and provides examples for a discussion post, a summative assessment, and a case study activity. The activities are designed for counselor educators to use within any core class of their online program, whether taught synchronously or asynchronously.
